Tired of same soulless gray and white boxes? Welcome home! This charming, sun-lit Berkeley home is filled with original details, warm finishes and heart. The original early 1900’s hardwood floors set the tone and accentuate the beautiful wainscoting, high ceilings, decorative fireplace, and built-ins. The two spacious bedrooms with generous closets both have leafy vistas. The kitchen offers Heath tile counters, stainless steel appliances, fir floors and access out to the deck and back yard. The period bathroom features a lovely clawfoot tub and custom vanity. Nicely sited in the back yard is a magical casita that the current owner used to house her loom and art studio. Additional bonus space can be found in the partially converted garage, perfect for a zoom room, home gym, or general hang out space. Newer windows and updated electrical provide peace of mind. Close to San Pablo Park, Berkeley Bowl and Ashby BART. Come take a look!
The best way to understand a home is from those who have lived there. Here is what the sellers have to say:
2705 Mathews stole our hearts while riding bikes home from work one night. At the time, we were tied up in a short sale for months on a different property and had spent a year seeing disappointing houses within our price range and making multiple offers that we were outbid on for larger homes. We rode by our Mathews house by accident, taking an alternate route home that day and saw a For Sale sign. We saw the home the following week and fell in love again when we saw the majestic redwood in our backyard! An urban oasis we instantly envisioned and placed the “winning” bid for our sweet California dream cottage. The original wainscoting, hardwood floors, and Craftsman era charm were now ours.
We have grown and changed so much as a family with this home. Starting out as a young professional couple with a dog, having a baby, and evolving our needs as a family for 12 years in this home. Over the course of living here, Jess left her job as an art therapist and started her dream career (in her dream cottage!) as a textile artist and weaver. Initially, she worked for 3 years out of the basement and then upgraded by building a weaving studio in the backyard. This detached Casita is so dear to Jess as she and a friend used Monterey sand and plaster to make adobe style walls and her lovely neighbors, (who you will LOVE!) Jim and Douglas (landscapers), laid the flagstone floors for her as a gift. Each detail of the studio, including the high ceilings and skylights, were intentional for the beauty and light needed to create. Working from home has allowed Jess to be home while Zephyr was younger and also to work alongside Moonshine, her “manager” cattle dog. The light of the garden and scent of jasmine, honeysuckle, and lavender plants wafting into the open windows has truly made this studio a dream workspace.
We love how our backyard is nestled in a private garden, yet we also live so close to everything! We feel like we have had the best of what the Bay Area has to offer in terms of a warm, sunny backyard yet also proximity to the freeway, Berkeley Bowl West, bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and even car repair shops all within a short stroll. You will love Paisan Pizza, Highwire Coffee, Lhasa Kharnak (local herb shop), Good Vibes, Standard Faire, Rare Barrel Brewery, and so many other local businesses. Raising a dog and a child here has been made more convenient and fun living so close to San Pablo Park. We have been to many gatherings and even hosted birthday parties there, played soccer, stargazed, and tossed a ball to our dog.
When we bought our house, the previous owners told us the neighbors were the best part and this has proven true. Mathews Street is a close knit, diverse, and helpful neighborhood community that extends all the way around the park. During the holidays, some volunteer neighbors set candles along the perimeter of the park and beyond and on Halloween, the neighborhood comes alive with decorated houses, hot cider, and even outdoor movies on Derby Street! October is a magical month here with the golden gingko trees that line newly-paved Derby street and make it a popular stop for photos and just admiring the “falling gold.” Wait, why are we moving?!!!! Only to be closer to family on the east coast, or we would grow old here, right along with our beloved redwood tree.
We hope you will love and grow with 2705 Mathews like we did and maybe even build a floor up, down, or back. Most of our neighbors have added onto their homes, with the same original floor plan as ours. We planned to but ended up feeling like the house was big enough for us with the outside-inside feeling of large ceilings, big windows, and French doors to the garden. Welcome to your urban oasis. We wish you so much love in this historic beauty.

From our 10 year old son, Zephyr:
The thing that I like most about the neighborhood, is the fact that there are lots of kids to play/ hang out with, there are lots of good climbing trees around the block and at San Pablo Park, and that the streets- (derby & ward) are freshly paved, so that I can ride my scooter and bike down them. The things that I like most about the house is that- it has big rooms, the house is very welcoming to the outside, lots of light gets in the house so it is never dark- (except at night), and finally it has a big backyard with a big nice redwood tree and a nice cottage/art studio in the backyard.
